When Julene's mother, Lucetta, went into labor with the next child (Afton Norvell), the family gathered up everyone and left. However, they neglected to take Julene, who had hid under the bed that her mother was about to deliver in. And there Julene hid until after the baby was born and the family returned.
As a pre-teen, Julene contracted Remitting Fever (Malaria). Her mother treated the disease with quinine. But Julene always felt that her health had been compromised.
In June 1941 Lee Julene "Julene" Wilkins Hughey was doing laundry in the milk house on the farm. She somehow spilled the boiling water onto her leg. She had scars on her leg the rest of her life.
Church attendance and "doing right" was very important to her. Her social acquaintances were drawn from these associations.
Julene was a very frugal person, able and willing to do many things when circumstances demanded. Her motto, especially after the depression, was: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.
Julene had an innate business acumen that became evident, when in later years, she took an active part in building her own investment portfolio.
It is believed that Julene had a congenital condition called polycystic kidney disease. From at least the age of 45, she was plagued with anemia. About the age of 80, she began to suffer dizziness, especially when standing up from a prone position. She would experience catatonic episodes, falling and injuring herself, then in 1986, she had her first stroke. She continued to have strokes until her death, 4 years later.
Buried
